What to wear to work on your first day?
Congratulations you just got a job! So now you can stop wondering aimlessly around the streets or
sitting on the couch watching re-runs of your favorite soaps!
You look through your ward robe and there’s nothing that looks like it should be worn on a Monday
morning or even worse to the hallowed premises of XYZ Corporation. What a blessed excuse for a
shopping spree!
Just a few tips, to make a mental note of when planning for your big entrance on your first day at work.
What does the company do- is it a corporate environment or a creative agency
What your interviewers were wearing when they interviewed you
What other workers in the organization were wearing ( if you came in contact with any of them)
What first impression you want to make when you make your entrance
Guidelines to dressing the part on your first day at work:
You can’t go wrong with a suit- The suit is the most accurate way of making a professional
first impression and of commanding some level of respect, regardless of age, size or color.
Hairstyle- Hair should be neat and well kept no wild hair dos or natty hair coloring.
Ladies- No low cut blouses, not saying you should look frumpy, but low cut blouses don’t speak
well and you may never have the chance to correct the impression that you are not a slut. Same
applies to the skirts and pant- not too tight, not too short.
Colors- Choice of colors for clothes should be cool, no bright colors, grays, browns, blacks and
whites are preferable and as you stabilize in the organization, you’ll find out what you can and
can’t get away with.
Scent- Please avoid the use of overpowering perfumes or scented lotions- keep your choice
of perfume subtle- remember that you may not be able to smell yourself but others will!
Jewellery or accessories- For both men and women, keep it simple, engagement and / or
wedding ring for women, one wedding band or class ring for men, simple earrings and necklace
for women. In a corporate organization, jewellery wearing men are frowned at as they give off
the impression that they are not serious.
Shoes- Avoid wearing shoes with scuffed heels make sure shoes are well polished- This
particularly applies to men, you can assess a man from the kind and quality of shoes he wears.
No one wants to know how broke you are- perception is everything.
