Just out of school what next?

Hurray! You just got your get out of jail free card from the ivory towers and now it’s time to face the
real world. Unfortunately we were made to believe that life in university was the ‘real’ world, however
the search for a job can prove to be the second shocking contact, (after NYSC) with the real real world!

Of course you will be gravely disappointed when you discover that you are on your own after all and
that the uncles and aunties who have promised to sort you out are just not able to. In actual fact the
real job hunt begins after NYSC particularly if you weren’t among the lucky ones who were retained at
their places of service.

So how do you chart a career course as a green horn in a big world?

Networking- This might seem like an alien world but you meet people every day who you
can discuss your career choices with, these people may or may not have a positive impact
in your life but it’s worth a try. Learn to ask intelligent questions from people who are more
experienced than you are.

Create a Resume- This document will prove to be the most important thing you’ll need. Make
sure to update it regularly with any work experience no matter how little you have gained.
Try acquiring some professional certifications on the side, this always proves to be an added
advantage.

If you are an intern already, make yourself useful and dependable so your bosses will have
reason to fight for you to stay.
Learn quickly, the art of office politics- Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut.
